Park benches are found in many parks but they aren't all the same. Depending upon where you go and what kind of park you are at, you may find park benches that are by themselves or in conjunction with picnic tables. They can be made of various materials and colors but the bench itself will tell you a lot about the park that you are in.
Looking at a bench will tell you what kind of people the park has hanging around and what you can expect from the park.
The park benches in New York City are just a bench with no table. They are typically metal and provide no details. They are your basic bench and can be very cold in the winter because the metal doesn't get warm. The homeless often make the benches their bed for the evening, so the least comfortable the parks can make them, the less chance they are used for sleeping.
Many national parks will use benches from the wood of a fallen tree. These benches can be very decorative if the person or organization has some hidden talent. Bears and squirrels can be carved into the wood to give it a fun look. There are also many park benches that have picnic tables attached to them in certain areas of the park so that families can easily bring a basket and sit and have lunch.
Community parks in your local area are where you will find the most variations of park benches. White, blue, green, magenta and every color in between can be seen in a community. Sometimes they try and theme it with certain sports teams nearby and others just want to add a splash of color near the playground. The benches are made from wood, recycled plastic, metal and even plastic coated metal.
Other parks have a cement bench. These can get very hot and very cold, depending upon the weather. These were often poured at the same time that a basketball court or other playing area was poured. They may crack over time but they will typically be around for awhile. Plus the weight of them prevents them from being stolen.
Some of the benches are made with slats while others are solid molding. There's nothing worse than going to a park and finding that the bench has been broken. If it hasn't been fixed, it will tell you a few things. Either it just got broken or that the park has lost its funding. When a park chooses a solid molding bench, they will most likely last a whole lot longer. These may cost a little more, but once they're purchased, they will be hanging around the park for the long haul.
Take a look at the benches in your area and you will be able to find out a lot about your community. Picnic tables mean that they are family-friendly while cold looking benches may mean that there's either low funding or people the community is trying to keep off of the bench. The material it's made of will tell you whether they have (or had) the money to spend or if they went with an old-fashioned wooden bench. The more comfortable the bench, the more the park anticipated having people hang around and enjoy the scenery.
